This year’s World Environment Day campaign focused on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”
We celebrated this remarkable event that was facilitated by the Regreening Africa project and Pamoja Project, with generous support from Dow and Barnfonden, aiming to foster environmental conservation and climate action. The event was more than just a celebration; it was a call to action, emphasizing the theme #GenerationRestoration.
The forum set the stage for a day of education, advocacy, and action. Alice Anukur, the Country Director of ChildFund Kenya, emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “This day provides an opportunity to focus global attention on pressing environmental challenges and encourages individuals and communities to take proactive steps towards environmental conservation.” Her words highlighted the urgency of addressing climate issues.
Mumbi Keega, Dow’s Managing Director for Eastern Africa and Public Affairs Leader for Africa, echoed this sentiment in her speech, “We have to be deliberate about socio-economic transformation in Africa by ensuring children are part of the solution in responding to the climate crisis.” Her message underscored the significance of involving young minds in the fight against climate change, inspiring everyone present to act.
Throughout the day, the children engaged in various activities aimed at environmental preservation. They planted tree seedlings, symbolizing hope and a commitment to restoring the planet. In addition to tree planting, the children showcased their advocacy through heartfelt poems. Their words painted vivid pictures of a world where nature thrived, free from the clutches of pollution and deforestation. The poems echoed the day’s central message: everyone, including the youngest members of society, has a role in protecting the environment.
The event was graced by various key stakeholders, including the Makueni County Government, Samli Women Group, Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), and the Kenya Forestry Research Institute. Their presence highlighted the collaborative effort required to tackle environmental issues effectively.
As the World Environment Day celebrations ended, the message was clear: together, we can work towards a sustainable and thriving planet. By raising awareness, inspiring others to act, and including everyone in the conversation, we can catalyze positive change and ensure a brighter future for generations to come.
